Adam’s first triathlon in early 2015 was sparked by a challenge from his younger brother. Since then, he has been hooked and gone on to complete dozens of triathlons including the St. George Ironman (70.3), Oceanside Ironman (70.3) and Ironman Texas (140.6). His passion for the sport and the community brought him to the SLTC. His natural personality is to help anyone who asks and receives satisfaction from others succeeding. For credibility and knowledge, he started the path to becoming a Triathlon coach and is now certified and excited to share the journey with others wanting to take on the challenge of triathlon. His goal is to help triathletes meet their race goals with a smile.

Coaching Philosophy. The 5 Wins of a Triathlon

#1. The most important win of a triathlon is showing up at the start. If you have followed your plan with a 5% +/- variance, maintained a solid nutrition plan and have not sustained any major injuries – the feeling at the start of your event should be one of celebration. The event itself is a few hours compared to the countless hours and miles you have spent in the pool, on the bike and wearing out your shoes. Remember to enjoy this moment – 99.99% of the population did not even show up J.

#2. Seeing the exit of the swim course and knowing you have accomplished a great feat is the next big win. After exiting the water take a quick look back at the course and smile; yes, it may have been rough, you may have had to stop, you may have been kicked in the throat – but you are out of the water. Celebrate this accomplishment!

#3. It is time to hop on your bike and enjoy this time to yourself. Depending on the distance, the bike can be the most calming part of the triathlon. The sound of those wheels slicing the wind and the constant churning of those human pistons I describe as a meditation. Remember to look around, when safe, and take in the scenery. Of course there are hills, wind and rain – what did you expect? As the dismount zone draws near, relax and tell yourself how well you did – you made it. Give your bike a little kiss or a pat on the frame and say thanks for getting me through this. This is the third win.

#4. Running is where the heart of a triathlon is exposed. Depending on the distance, you may have 3/6/13/26 wins throughout this segment. Each mile is a victory by itself… do not worry about mile 26 when you have not completed mile 4…think about mile 5 and count that next marker as a victory. Before you know it, there will be one more mile to the finish.

#5. Win number 5 is not necessarily crossing the finish line – it is the accomplishment of an accumulation of 10’s of thousands of yards in the lap pool, a thousand miles on the bike and hundreds of miles on those shoes. This is the triumph of overcoming the numerous obstacles of life that were put in our way. This is the winning wink you give yourself every time you look in that mirror, knowing you did not let life bring you down – Congratulations – you are a triathlete!

I believe Triathlon is not about where I place in a race, I believe it is overcoming the demon(s) that are constantly challenging me … and beating the living crap out of them.
